Steel bars can be classified according to their role in the structure, such as stressed steel bars, erecting steel bars, hooked steel bars, bent steel bars, stirrups, distributed bars, etc. Steel rods are mainly used in prestressed concrete structures to improve the compressive strength and durability of concrete.

The difference between steel rods and steel bars is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Chemical composition: The raw material of steel rods for prestressed concrete has low content of harmful impurities, such as P and S not greater than 0.025; while P and S of HRB steel bars are not greater than 0.045, and HPB steel bars P is not greater than 0.045 and S is not greater than 0.050.

Manufacturing method: Both HRB and HPB steel bars are hot-rolled; while the steel bars for prestressed concrete are obtained by quenching and tempering low-alloy steel hot-rolled wire rods after cold working (or without cold working).

Mechanical properties: The tensile strength of steel rods for prestressed concrete is not less than 1080Mpa; HPB300 stipulates not less than 420Mpa, and HRB500 stipulates not less than 630Mpa.

Process performance: Spot welding joints of steel rods for prestressed concrete are not allowed.

Plasticity index: The elongation after breaking and the total elongation at maximum force of steel rods used for prestressed concrete are much smaller than those of hot-rolled steel bars.

Test requirements: Steel rods used for prestressed concrete must be subjected to a 1000h relaxation test, the elongation gauge length after fracture is 8 times the nominal diameter of the steel rod, and the maximum force elongation gauge length is 200mm.

In addition, steel bars can be classified according to their role in the structure, such as stressed steel bars, erecting steel bars, hooked steel bars, bent steel bars, stirrups, distributed bars, etc. Steel rods are mainly used in prestressed concrete structures to improve the compressive strength and durability of concrete.
